Cool nights, shorter days and scattered frost are adding up to the first signs of fall color along the Blue Ridge Parkway, reports the N.C. Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development.

"The best plan and the surest way to see good color is to drive some distance on the Parkway, following the changing elevations and North-South orientation," according to the agency. "The maples are in the very early stages of color while the sumacs and sourwoods are already displaying their bright red foliage."

For an interactive map that predicts when different regions will peak, go to www.visitnc.com/experience/no4_nc_fallcolor/report.asp. Or call (866) 653-2837.

Closer to home

For color a little closer to home and to save money on gas, the Anson County Tourism Development Authority suggests stopping by Uwharrie Mountain region in the Piedmont. The authority is putting its money where its mouth is by offering a $10 gas voucher to travelers who spend the night at participating lodging. For information, call (704) 694-0177 or visit www.autumninanson.com.
