Meet Slim's 'tender Olivia Rohrer. Toiling in Triangle taverns since 18, this tapstress has found her home holding up the rails at Raleigh's prime downtown dive bar for two years now and loving every minute of it. Mixing it up and cracking bottles to pay those pesky college bills she's studying to be a high school history teacher the smart sipster is prepping for pupils both in and out of the classroom: "If I can deal with drunks, I can deal with kids, right?" And when she's not popping PBRs, hitting the books or getting picked on by those "rad" coworkers she digs so (Paulie, Mark, Abe, Matt, Serino/C-Wing and Van, the owner)? Find her chilling with her boyfriend, Shannon Lamm ... who she says, is "pretty rad, too."
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
How you landed at Slim's: I was out at a bar one night and bumped into Joe Yeary, the manager at Slim's at the time. I mentioned that I was looking for a job and he said, "Just come work for me". I met up with him the next day and that was that.
Popping PBR's at Slim's is better than: Cleaning the bathrooms at Slim's.
What this bar brings to the Raleigh scene: I think it is probably the only dive bar in Raleigh where you can sit down, drink a cold beer, listen to some rad music and be entertained by the bartender. Another thing that's great about Slim's is the fact that there's a pretty diverse crowd that hangs out here, from the guys that work over at the RBC bank that come by Friday afternoons, to the tattooed kids that come drink most evenings. Everyone feels at home sitting at the bar here.
If you have a drink your hand, it's probably a: Brooklyn Pilsner. We started carrying it at the bar, and I've kind of gotten hooked.
Drink you could make behind your back: Pretty much anything involving Evan Williams Green Label.
Your TV is mostly stuck on channel: 110. It's the Food Network, and it's awesome.
Which of your coworkers are you most likely to drunk text? Hmm ... that's a tough one considering I've probably drunk texted all of them at least a handful of times.
If they made a movie about your life, who would play the voice in your head? Morgan Freeman.
If you could live in any fictional place, where would it be? Somewhere that is 70 degrees and sunny at all points in time.
Concert you wouldn't be caught dead at: Dream Theater.
Last song or album download/purchase: Roky Erickson, "You're Gonna Miss Me."
Movie you'd be late to work for: "Toy Story 2" was a good movie.
If you didn't know better, you'd think this song was written about you: "Brand New Key" by Melanie.
A pop-culture phenomenon you could live without: Miley Cyrus or any member of the "Jersey Shore" cast. I don't get the whole men-wearing-body-glitter thing, not to mention the overly gelled hair and orange complexion of all of them.
Biggest celeb trainwreck: I guess Charlie Sheen, or those girls from "Teen Mom 2."
A book that made you want to be a better person: I don't know if it can get much better than this.
Your perfect roundtable who's there: I'd probably only need Paulie. He knows a lot and I mean A LOT about dragons.
People should know that you: Are rad!
You sometimes get mistaken for: A good bartender.
One thing you refuse to do under any circumstances: Ride a roller coaster. Or go to the fair.
One thing you'd easily do for the right cost: Not a lot.
Most random thing you've been asked to do while bartending? Hey partner, can you giddy up on a Bud Light for me?
Pet peeve: On a busy night someone is at the bar practically using their entire body to flag you down. When you get to them you ask what they want and they say, "Hold on" and turn around to ask all of their friends what they're supposed to be ordering. Drives me nuts.
Your guilty pleasure: "The Real Housewives of New York" ... and Atlanta ... and Orange County ... and Beverly Hills ... and any other spin-offs they'll make.
What one thing do you wish you could tell people about patronizing any bar? Don't argue with the bartender. Last time I checked you were the drunk one.
Your go-to local pub: Slim's!
If you're not at work, you're most likely: At school.
Other bars in the Triangle you have worked: Stool Pigeons and the Flying Saucer way back when. Slim's is definitely my favorite by far.
