311 GALLERY AND STUDIOS: "Exquisite Line: Engravings 2011." Reception June 5, 5-7 p.m. Engraving workshop June 6-7 at the Print Studio at 311.
I met Oscar J. Gillespie when he did the summer residency last year at Artspace and again at the Print Summit at ECU. After taking a workshop with Oscar, it occurred to me that perhaps the publics perception of engraving needed to be updated. Oscar agreed to invite artists to participate in this exhibit that we call Exquisite Line. The reason for the title will be evident upon viewing the work included.

As a psychologist, I am interested in the idea that life reconfigured out of the broken pieces of the old self is a life that is more beautiful and sparkles with the new found passion and compassion for self and others. This body of work is where the physical, spiritual and existential all meet for a good time.

REBUS WORKS: "Inside/Outside, Right/Left," 6-10 p.m. Opening reception for a two-part show by Patrick Fitzgerald. Part one June 3-25, part two July 1-30.
This exhibition is a partial catalog of two sides of my current creative work. Visually different, the works reflect the creative process of many people- a sort of multitasking of and an immediate response to creative ideas from different artistic perspectives. One body infers biology, microscopic or conceptual spaces. It is to be enjoyed visually and inspected closely. The "Right" body of work partially refers to the visual or right side of my brain. These works are inspired by Pop art, Japanese prints, contemporary ditgital data visualization. The other body of work, "Left" refers to the analytical or left side of my brain and represents a psychological space. It is the minds-eye trying to make coherence of everyday events and incidents. These are storyboards of stories untold. All my work is a hybrid of handrawn and digitized media. The final large pieces are unique "multimedia" works, consisting of large scale archival digital prints mounted on board and covered with paint, encaustic wax, and other mixed media. The smaller prints are "artist's proofs" and are a sort of proof of concept in my creative process. Please enjoy!

FLANDERS GALLERY: "Concession Stand," by Shaun Richards. Exhibit runs through July 16.
In his own words: "The idea for Concession Stand came about as I became interested in how integrated marketing and advertising have become in our daily lives, to the point that we hardly notice. We simply accept it. This body of work plays on the phrase 'concession stand,' that is, things we concede vs things we stand against - yet those two words equate to a marketplace. These paintings are both reflective and somewhat reactionary. They address the psychology of being a part of this web: as part of a demographic, as employees, as an audience for film and tv, as consumers. All in all, we contribute and participate. My interest is focused on how this affects our awareness, identity, sense of self-worth, ethics, and just how all-encompassing it is.

ISAAC HUNTER'S: "Tell Me Something Good," with Hunter Tapscott. 7 p.m. Exhibit runs entire month.
"I see the camera as a tool, a paintbrush if you like, to use to make visual art. Some photographers look for the powerful scene, the beautiful scene, the emotional scene and they photograph it. I prefer to create the scene and then photograph it."
Hunter Hilton Tapscott, photographer
