Carolina Chocolate Drops play tonight with Luminescent Orchestrii at Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill. The bands recorded a four-song EP together last year. JULIE ROBERTS

Submitted by DAVID MENCONI —

If you were around these parts back when driving between Raleigh and Chapel Hill involved N.C. 54 and not Interstate 40, you might remember The Popes - a very fine guitar-pop band that fit right into the prevailing college-radio ethos of the late '80s. Alas, the group dissolved during the (first) Bush administration and hasn't been heard from since. But the band's 1989 mini-album "Hi, We're The Popes" recently resurfaced in digital form, and response was positive enough that they're going to do some shows again. The Popes' first show in 20 years (!) happens Saturday at Chapel Hill's Local 506, with Phil Collins from their peers Satellite Boyfriend opening. Showtime is 9 p.m. and tickets are $8. For details, see local506.com.
