| [Opening 7/18] Alex Gibney, who created the recent Oscar-winning documentary ''Taxi to the Dark Side,'' provides this rebel-yelling chronicle of the gonzo journalism pioneer and author of ''Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.'' Johnny Depp narrates by reading Thompson's writings, including a column in which he predicted a war ''fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides'' that would come out of Sept. 11.
