[Opening 1/23] Brendan Fraser stars as a book-binder who drags his daughter (Eliza Bennett) through every dingy old bookstore of Europe, seeking a novel that swallowed his wife nine years before. The film has decent effects, bang-up settings and a good cast but it's rather dull. GRADE: C
 
Marley & Me PG-13

Based on a book by journalist John Grogan, this is a movie that on the outside looks sappy. But Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston and a pesky puppy-turned-dog turn in solid performances. (2 hours, 3 minutes). GRADE: B

The title pretty much says it all in this horror flick. Jensen Ackles (oSupernaturalo) and Jaime King (oGary Unmarriedo) star (1 hour, 41 minutes). GRADE: B

Frank and April (the on-screen reunion of Leonard DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) play a 1950s couple in suburban Connecticut. The good old days, this isn't, but Leo and Kate give excellent performances; Winslet won the Golden Globe for hers (1 hour, 51 minutes). GRADE: C+
 
Slumdog Millionaire R  
  some violence, disturbing images and language
An impoverished teen from Mumbai is about to win big on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," but his motivation for going on the show is not financial (2 hours). Grade: B-
 
The Unborn PG-13  
  intense sequences of violence, disturbing images, language, sexual references
A young woman tries to avoid being overtaken by a spirit in this horror flick (1 hour, 28 minutes). (not reviewed)
 
Valkyrie PG-13  
  violence and brief strong language
The chilling backstory of a 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Tom Cruise is the lead, although the part doesn't fit him very well. (2 hours). GRADE: B-
