The Remodelers Council of the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County held the 16th annual STAR Awards at the Renaissance Raleigh Hotel at North Hills on May 7. Nearly 40 projects representing the best remodeling work from attics to basements, inside and out, received awards. Two building companies — TrendMark Inc. and Complete Construction Co. — made the trip to the stage so often to collect their gold awards, you hoped they’d brought the truck to haul them home.

Tom Gipson: builder, philanthropist, community leader
Tom Gipson builds luxury homes starting in the $900,000s; he builds other homes for free. The Raleigh custom home builder collects fine wine and antique cars that include Jaguars, Rolls Royces and a Porsche, but when he heard the family of a disabled child had no transportation, he and two colleagues bought them a car. He serves on the boards and councils of numerous charitable, civic and professional organizations, including the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County, Grace Lutheran Church and Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. But at the Lake Gaston house where Gipson and his wife Pat often entertain, the builder/philanthropist can be seen wearing a baseball cap with a fake ponytail that matches his silky white hair. Remember the “flipping” concept? Pay a reduced price for a fixer-upper, make the repairs, and sell it for a tidy profit. As the saying goes, that ship has sailed.
